. This beautiful and historic site is part of the B.W. Hardin League, immediately south of Hardin Cemetery and north of Atascosito Station. Atascosito has been a Spanish fort since 1756, and became the seat of government for the area in 1826. The city and county name was changed to Liberty in 1831. All sections are platted.

The Center is named after one of the country's most important legends and Jean Daniel's great grandfather, Sam Houston. The building was dedicated and opened on May 14, 1977. The new 17,600 square foot library is divided into exhibition space, archives and library, a meeting room, and offices.
Photocopies And Scanning
All visitors to the reading room or museum must register at reception in the lobby. Researchers visiting the reading room must complete a registration form, agree to comply with all financial management guidelines, and present a valid photo ID and proof of current address.
Please allow at least ten minutes for this process. All cell phones and pagers must be turned off in the reading room or museum. Can be called and found in the lobby. with their desire to preserve their history and provide a center for its research. On September 27, 1973, former Governor Price and Jean Daniel donated 117 acres of land to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to build a local historical resources library in 1985, creating a 127-acre complex. Local support and fundraising was organized by the Atascosito Historical Society with Charles
W. Fisher, Jr. as president and building committee, chaired by Ambassador Edward Clark and Mrs. Camilla Davis Blaffer Trammel from 1973 to 1976. The Lamar College Board elected 7 of November, 1973 to join as regional assistants for the American bicentennial of the Texas State Library.

The Center is located three miles north of Liberty, Texas on 650 FM 1011, about 200 miles east of Austin and 41 miles southeast of Houston.
The museum is located between Houston and Beaumont off State Highway 146. Visitors of all ages are welcome to tour the museum and visit to the buildings of the Town. Researchers between 13 and 16 can use the materials in the reading room if accompanied by an adult.
At least one adult is required for a young researcher. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted unless attending group exhibitions. The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center is part of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission's (TSLAC) Archives and Information Services Division (ARIS) and serves as the official repository of local historical resources for the 10 Southeast counties.

We ask visitors to the reading room to keep their belongings in lockers in a small room adjacent to the reading room. These free lockers are secured with individual keys for the privacy and security of your belongings.
The interior dimensions of the cabinets are 16" deep and 14.5" wide and can hold items up to 29" long.
